The Feel of Good GolfMany people have said that "feel" is a key component of playing golf well. What they mean by this is that you ought to be able to tell whether something is right or wrong, but how it feels. At first sight, it's not obvious what people mean by "feel", especially if you talk in general terms. However, if you look at specific parts of your game, especially your swing, then things should gradually start to become clearer. Consider taking a swing. If you swing really hard, you will not be able to feel whether the ball has been correctly hit. Additionally, hitting the ball really hard makes more difficult to control your muscles, and then means that your balance will not be as good. On the other hand, if you swingly slightly less hard, you can use your entire body (including learning to twist your body) to take the shot, as well as ensuring that you hit the ball properly and correctly. Another aspect of taking a powerful stroke is to use your entire body to take the stroke. To do this you need achieve good balance and swing easily. You also want to avoid lifting your head near the end of a stroke - this doesn't add power (despite what some players think), but actually decreases it. Instead, try to keep your head still, and keep your eye on the ball, during your swing. Generally speaking, if you feel comfortable, both physically and mentally, you will play more easily, and also play better. When you are comfortable, you will find yourself playing more fluidly, and strength and powerful swings will come naturally. On the other hand, if you tense your muscles, or try to slavishly copy other players, you will not play well. Developing and playing golf in your own style will produce much better results than playing in an unnatural and uncomfortable way! By playing this way, over time, you will indeed start to develop a "feel" for what correct shots feel like, which clubs are best for you, and the type of decisions that best suit your style of play. Moreover, by developing your "feel" for golf, you will not only play better, but increase your pleasure from the game. |
